Genetic Scientist, R&D

Fulgent Genetics is seeking an enthusiastic and passionate individual to join our R&D team. The Genetic Scientist, R&D position will be responsible for the development, design, execution and implementation of scientific research projects in support of Fulgent’s new product development effort. Essential Job Duties:

Next Gen Lab Technologist

The Next Gen Lab Technologist works under the direct supervision of the lab Supervisor or Director and performs duties delegated under the authority of CLIA 88 CFR Section 493.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the development and implementation of new procedures.
  • Use established molecular genetic methodology to perform and analyze a variety of standardized clinical laboratory tests. These tests will be for the purpose of diagnosis of molecular genetic disorders.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum Education: Bachelor's Degree in Biology or related field of science.
  • Minimum Experience: 1 year as CLS in an approved clinical molecular genetics laboratory.
  • Must have experience with analysis of sequence data using standardized human gene mutation nomenclature and practice a high level of integrity and honesty in maintaining confidentiality and performing duties.

Laboratory Support Genetic Counselor

We are seeking an experienced, full-time, laboratory genetic counselor to work at our office in Temple City, CA or Atlanta, GA. This position is immediately available. We are only considering onsite candidates at this time.

Job Responsibilities (included but are not limited):

  • Liaison between Fulgent Genetics and other healthcare practitioners such as clinical genetic counselors, physicians, and clients pertaining to available testing options, test standards and limitations, laboratory reporting policies, etc.
  • Provides clinical expertise to curation scientist and directors with accessioning inquiries, test order modifications, and result interpretation
  • Contributes to test improvement and new test development
  • Assist with marketing team in patient and physician literature
  • Assist with variant interpretation and reporting

  • Provides posttest tele-counselling as needed for carrier screening and other results

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Prior experience as a laboratory genetic counselor preferred but not required

  • Board certification as a Genetic Counselor by the ABGC or eligibility to take the board exam

Laboratory Supervisor

The Laboratory Supervisor functions as the managing technologist, under the guidance of the Lab Director, and is responsible for the planning, development and implementation of objectives for the Lab. The Lab Supervisor is responsible for coordinating all technical, logistical, and administrative functions to ensure prompt and accurate testing and reporting of results for all clinical laboratory samples within established timeframes. The Lab Supervisor functions within the scope of practice regulated by State and National government as well as various accrediting agencies.

Key Job Elements:

  • Provide day-to-day supervision of test performance by testing personnel, including approval of extraction quality checks for samples to proceed with testing. May authorize rejection of samples found to have poor quality.
  • Involvement in new test validation.
  • Involvement in review and update of clinical technical SOPs with approval of the Lab Director.
  • Oversight in maintenance of laboratory cleanliness and organized work environment; sign off on maintenance records on weekly or monthly schedules as needed.
  • Oversight of completion of all required training.
  • May perform routine operation and preventive maintenance on laboratory equipment involved in laboratory testing procedures (includes troubleshooting when necessary).
  • May be responsible for performing testing for, and data submission of, samples received for CAP proficiency testing.
  • May perform assays required for internal proficiency testing and retain well-documented records of test result concordance.
  • Maintain clear, legible, well–documented laboratory records of all clinical testing performed
  • Analysis and interpretation of test results, run controls, understand test limitations, and ensure data suitability for results reporting.
  • Be alert of any/all safety hazards in the laboratory and report to the Lab Director, upper management or facilities management team as needed.
  • Hold accountability and responsibility for all work performed by any licensed or non-licensed technicians.
  • Maintain oversight of laboratory staff training.
  • Conduct competency assessment of laboratory staff.
  • Assure that all remedial actions are taken whenever test systems deviate from the laboratory's established performance specifications;
  • In the event of non-conformances, ensuring that results of test examinations are not reported until all corrective actions have been taken and the test system is properly functioning;
  • May be involved in supporting and performing tests for research and developmental studies.
  • Maintain authority to issue verbal or written warnings to laboratory staff for negligence or non-compliance or standardized laboratory regulations.
  • Occasional involvement in completing assignments from other departments (frequency as needed).
  • Retain sole responsibility of maintaining licensure status as necessary for the position. This includes licensing for both ASCP & California State.
  • Involvement within the compliance team to help oversee procedures for maintaining employee training with respect to topics such as HIPAA, Safety, Harassment, & etc.
  • Maintaining Lab expense/budget tracking
  • Facilitate vendor auditing
  • Oversight of the CGMBS program and maintain correspondence with California State University of Los Angeles.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in molecular biology, genetics, or related field with minimum 6 years of experience in a clinical setting with hands-on involvement in molecular/genetics testing is required.
  • Or Master’s Degree in in molecular biology, genetics, or related field with minimum 4 years of experience in a clinical setting with hands-on involvement in molecular/genetics testing is required.
  • Or Ph.D. Degree in molecular biology, genetics, or related field with minimum 2 years of experience in a clinical setting with hands-on involvement in molecular/genetics testing is required.
  • Must have acquired and maintained CGMBS licensure.
  • Minimum 6 years of experience in a clinical setting with hands-on involvement in molecular/genetics testing is preferred.
  • Must have great work ethic and immaculate attention to detail.
  • Knowledge of molecular biology and/or medical genetics in a clinical setting.

Associate Lab Technician

Fulgent Genetics is looking for an experienced, full-time, associate lab technician to join our fast growing laboratory. This position is immediately available.

Responsibilities/Duties include (but are not limited to):

  • Perform DNA extraction from various specimen types, specimen Triage, PCR, qPCR, Sanger Sequencing, and/or other molecular assays as needed.
  • Maintain good time-management and organization under pressure.
  • Ability to efficiently and accurately handle high volume of samples in limited time.
  • Maintain good record keeping for all testing performed as mandated by established protocols at Fulgent.
  • Follow only approved laboratory procedures for all divisions of of clinical testing that the technician has received and completed training on.
  • Learn and assist with troubleshooting skills and be able to identify problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results. All such circumstances should immediately be brought to the attention of the lab supervisor.
  • Assist with daily routine work in maintenance of lab cleanliness and order

Director of Genetic Counseling

We are seeking an experienced, full-time, Director of Genetic Counseling to work at our office in Temple City, CA or Atlanta, GA. The Director of Genetic Counseling will be responsible for leading the development of the Genetic Counseling Department and its Programs at Fulgent Genetics. Executive duties include but not limited to the development of operational SOPs, monitoring of the department’s financials, design and execution of training and personnel activities for the department.


Job Responsibilities (including but are not limited to):

Strategic Planning and Program Development

  • Lead the development of a strategic plan for Genetic Counseling support services to Fulgent partners such as medical providers, medical facilities, patients, and other functional teams of the organization.
  • In collaboration with senior leadership, other functional teams, and partners, recommend and develop new opportunities or programs to optimize access and demand for service. Collaborate with clinical and administrative staff in implementing new programs.
  • Solicit input and involvement from stakeholders as part of the planning process.
  • Develop and recommend programs, policies, and procedures in accordance with the mission of Fulgent and its goals for growth and expansion.
  • Lead and/or participate in departmental and/or provider committees, programs, and/or initiatives as requested.

Operational Management

  • Create Standard Operating Procedures for the Genetic Counseling team.
  • Coordinate resources with senior leadership.
  • Manage day-to-day operations to ensure the team consistently delivers high quality service.
  • Create and implement workforce plans to meet current and future growth goals.
  • Monitor service levels and workflows, and implements strategies for improvement.
  • Routinely pilot new approaches and assess potential for roll-out department wide.

  • Achieving high service levels through efficient workflows (e.g., low wait times for callers, short turnarounds between first call and scheduling).
  • Supporting the clinical care and research growth targets of Fulgent, while maintaining (and improving) the level of compassionate and knowledgeable care.
  • Adopting new tools to improve the efficiency and accuracy of matching patients to physicians.
  • Serving as a critical business partner to clinical services.
  • Works collaboratively with functional, as well as other departments, to develop and implement programs and tools that support the above objectives, and Fulgent’s organizational goals.

Staff Management

  • Provide oversight and direction to all the Genetic Counseling team.
  • Coach, mentor, and develop staff by providing effective performance feedback through employee recognition, opportunities, and disciplinary action.
  • Empower staff to take responsibility for their jobs and goals. Delegate activities/tasks with the expectation of accountability and regular communication.
  • Provide guidance to direct reports to ensure goals and objectives are achieved within established time frames. Intercede to resolve problems when necessary.

Financial Management

  • Oversee financial activity of the department and lead the development and planning of operating budget.
  • Review financial analyses and take appropriate action based on findings.
  • Communicate and explain budgetary goals and guidelines to team members.

Relationship Management

  • Build a trusting and collaborative network of relationships with stakeholders.
  • Partners with leadership of clinical services in optimizing access for stakeholders.
  • Influence stakeholders and negotiate as needed to enlist involvement and expertise.


Minimum Qualifications:

Education & Experience

  • Minimum - Master’s degree in Genetic Counseling from a college or university program accredited by the American Board of Genetic Counseling or a Master’s degree in clinical or medical genetics prior to the establishment of the American Board of Genetic Counseling.
  • Minimum - Three (3) years relevant experience in the management of genetic services and/or programs.
  • Preferred - Five (5) years relevant experience in the management of genetic services and/or programs.

Licenses and Certifications

  • Minimum - Eligibility for certification by the American Board of Genetic Counseling.
  • Preferred - Certification by the American Board of Genetic Counseling.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist in everyday business functions such as Business Development, Marketing, Project Management, Customer Service, Account Management.
  • Identify client needs and propose appropriate products or services.

  • Initiate and maintain contact with clients and prospects.

Bioinformatics Software Quality Assurance Engineer

The Bioinformatics Software Quality Assurance (SQA) Engineer will ensure that internal software changes are properly defined and tested to guarantee that accurate genomic testing results are presented for analysis and reporting. This position will track the modifications that are scheduled for the next software release, help define the areas that will be affected by those modifications, and use automated test programs to evaluate the impact of the modifications. Additionally, this position will go through a functionality checklist to ensure that the end-user will not experience any unforeseen issues as a consequence of the modifications. The SQA Engineer will identify and document in a bug tracking system any issues encountered during either the automated or manual testing. This position will help maintain a list of available and desired automated tests, and will make sure that the set of data used for the automated tests is up to date.

Key Job Elements:

  • Work with software engineers to track scheduled software updates and the scope of their potential impact.
  • Determine which tests need to be run prior to signing off on the software updates.
  • Evaluate results of automated tests, resolving any differences from predicted outcomes.
  • Manually step through checklist to ensure GUI behaves as expected.
  • Log any unresolved issues in bug tracking database.
  • Define additional automated tests that should be performed.
  • Refine GUI checklist so that it can efficiently identify any critical functions that are not working properly.
  • Maintain input set of data and expected output results for automated testing.
  • Work with curation scientists and other end users to identify enhancements that would further improve quality assurance.

Qualifications:

  • BS degree in computer science, bioinformatics, or a related field.
  • 2 years of experience in software development or quality assurance.
  • Understanding of software quality assurance methodologies, tools, and processes.
  • Strong experience with issue tracker software (e.g. JIRA, Bugzilla).
  • Ability to troubleshoot both individually and as part of a team.
  • Good oral and written skills with the ability to communicate in an open, transparent, timely and consistent manner.
  • Must enjoy working in a multi-disciplinary and collaborative environment.
  • Exposure to Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) data is a plus.
  • Experience with SQL, JavaScript, Python, Bash, Java, and/or Scala is a plus.
  • Experience with automated build systems and/or continuous integration tools (e.g. Jenkins, Atlassian Bamboo) is a plus.
